Our Story

HISTORY

The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum was founded in 1966 with the goal of establishing a permanent tribute honouring BC’s outstanding athletes, teams, and builders of sport. The Hall stewards a collection of 27,000 artifacts and 100,000 archival documents that represents over 150 years of BC sports heritage.

In 2018, the Indigenous Sport Gallery at the BC Sports Hall of Fame is the largest known permanent gallery in the world dedicated to Indigenous sport and was developed in partnership with the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I-SPARC), City of Vancouver, and the Province of British Columbia. The Indigenous Sport Gallery builds upon the Hall’s previous exhibits highlighting Indigenous contributions to BC sport heritage, the First Peoples Gallery (1992) and Aboriginal Sport Gallery (2008).

The gallery highlights the accomplishments and contributions of Indigenous athletes, coaches and builders who have had a profound impact on sport history and culture – and brings their stories to life. Together with our partners, the BC Sports Hall of Fame hopes to advance the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Call to Action #87 through the Indigenous Sport Gallery.
